Four seats open on CU Board of Regents

The Board of Regents is Colorado’s only elected higher education board, and the body was established in Colorado’s original 1876 constitution.

Seven regents are elected from the state’s congressional districts, and two are elected statewide. Elections for the board are partisan, and members can serve two six-year terms. As with the State Board of Education, some members serve longer than 12 years because of being appointed to fill partial terms.

Four board seats are on the ballot this year, although the main act is the at-large race between incumbent Democrat Stephen Ludwig and Republican Brian Davidson.

It’s an intramural bout – Ludwig is a CU-Colorado Springs grad and once worked in the university president’s office, and Davidson holds multiple CU degrees and works as a physician and faculty member at the university’s Anschutz Medical Center.

The race is also a grudge match because Ludwig beat Davidson by a very narrow margin in 2006. And the race is the only one on ballots statewide this year, because none of the state constitutional offices, such as governor, are up and there are no U.S. Senate races either.

The four seats and the candidates:

  • Stephen Ludwig, Democrat – The owner of a communications consulting company, Ludwig previously worked for CH2M-Hill and TIAA-CREF. He currently serves on the board of the Auraria Higher Education Center. Ludwig was one of two regents who voted no on naming Bruce Benson as sole finalist for the CU president’s job in 2008. Website
  • Brian Davidson, Republican – A graduate of CU’s medical school, Davidson also holds a CU MBA and works as a physician and faculty anesthesiologist at the Anschutz campus.
