1 Response for “Aurora expands full-day kindergarten to all”

  1. “That’s why Aurora Public Schools leaders say they’re investing $2.6 million each year from the district’s 2008 tax increase to fund free full-day kindergarten for all children.”

    Not exactly.

What this article fails to address is the fact that the funding for all-day kindergarten is only funneled to the district public schools and NOT the public charter schools in Aurora. The promise was made by APS leadership back in 2008 that the money would go to ALL children in Aurora schools – including charter schools. Once the money was in hand, however, the district actually decided that the funding would not go to ALL public school children in Aurora and blocked this critical funding stream – voted on by the citizens of Aurora, including many formerly-excited charter school parents or prospective parents – from going to the public charter schools. As such, full-day kindergarten is NOT funded for ALL public school children in Aurora, and public charter schools that made promises to have full-day kindergarten for their students either had to renege on those promises or redirect other critical educational funds from stretched budgets to fund full-day programs due to deceptive district practices . An important distinction missed in this article.
