Parents who have chosen to place their children in public schools should have the right to decide on the standards of education. It was primarily parents who testified on August 2nd and primarily parents who wrote in, asking for rejection of the national standards. It is the parents who are ultimately responsible for the education and upbringing of their children–not businesses, politicians, special interest groups, or even schools. It is inconceivable that the parents’ representatives (SBE) would act to undermine the parents’ will–especially when it is made so painfully clear. While our society rings with demands for smaller government, the (slim) majority of the SBE has acted to give more power and control to the government by taking it away from the people. This will have to be considered when it is finally our turn to vote.
