One has to wonder, in this current funding environment, where schools (mostly elementary schools) will find the funds to buy and maintain large numbers of computers and broadband connections. Will this be one more “unfunded mandate” from the State? Will we now need to begin teaching children word processing in Kindergarten so they are proficient for the 3rd grade writing test? Sad.
I appreciated learning about these changes from CDE staff during their first “tour” stop in Colorado Springs. I highly recommend attending one of the tour site visits. Led by Julie Oxenford O’Brien, UCD, who did a terrific job faciltating a group with urgent questions, our team left with many clear answers and next steps. For those on the assessment teams, I hope they look to assessments that incorporate the use of student response systems, or clickers, as a way of test management. I too fear having our precious computers overrun with a multitude of mandated tests instead of rich project-based and problem-bases learning opportunities.
