If a patient fails to follow the advice of a doctor to lose weight and change diet and suffers a debilitating disease, is the doctor or the patient responsible? If a student performs poorly on a test due to malnutrition, illness, a vocabulary gap, etc., is that the responsibility of the student, teacher or society? Are teachers really the most important factor in the education of a child? What about parents and, of course, the student? Why aren’t such questions being studied and answered before determining who’s responsible for education’s myriad of problems?
Linking teacher evaluation with student progress is not about assigning all the blame for educational failure on one component of the education equation. It’s about giving teachers the tools and incentives to help them succeed at what they were hired to do: teach students. Student achievement is not the only factor that will be used in assessing teacher effectiveness, but it is an important one. The fact remains that every child can learn–and there are schools and teachers throughout Connecticut (and no doubt Colorado) that have proven that.
We think the legislation introduced will significantly enhance the Centennial State’s chances of winning the second round of Race to the Top, and hope Connecticut lawmakers will follow suit.

Quit whining and start helping. All paddles in the water please!
Where were these angry teachers when their PERA annual benefit increase was misappropriated with PERA’s SB 10-001?
