The quality of education for all children should not depend on being chosen by lottery to attend West Denver Prep or any public school. Lotteries constitute blatant discrimination and should be banned from public schools. Growing evidence (UCLA & Harvard Civil Rights Projects) reveals that charter schools are accelerating the re-segregation of public schools and that Latinos in Denver Public Schools (DPS) are more likely to be in schools of 90-100 percent Latinos. Further, white students (20 percent of the DPS student population) are increasingly likely to be in schools where they constitute the largest group, even the majority. The UCLA study also pointed that magnet schools are more effective than charters as a tool to integrate, ethnically and economically, and that students achieve more in magnet schools. That being the case, why has DPS focused on charter schools, as opposed to magnet schools, to the detriment of regular public schools?
