Lawrence Hernandez listens to comments at a Sept. 25 public meeting in Pueblo.

Lawrence Hernandez, the controversial leader of the Cesar Chavez Schools Network, was fired late Friday, following an 11-hour executive session of his governing board.

His wife Annette, who started the network with him, and another executive ,Velia Rincon, also were terminated.

The firings follow a tumultuous five-hour board meeting Sept. 25, when the network’s governing board removed the Hernandezes and Rincon from the network but said they could work at two of the five Chavez schools.

This week, angry staff members at the two schools – Cesar Chavez Academy and Dolores Huerta Preparatory High – reportedly threatened to resign if the Hernandezes came to their schools.

And Lawrence Hernandez retained a Denver law firm to negotiate a buyout, prompting Pueblo City Schools Superintendent Kathy West to write a letter saying the district would not allow state funding to be used for that purpose.

Read the Pueblo Chieftain story, Chavez exes fired, and a story about finances at the network’s online GOAL Academy.

Also, the Colorado Springs Gazette blogs about the letter from West to Dennis Feuerstein, the network’s governing board chair.

Check back with Ed News next week for a full report on the latest events at the embattled network.
